After a six month trial, the four wannabe suicide bombers of 21st July 2005 have been found guilty of conspiracy to murder.
Muktar Said Ibrahim, Yassin Hassan Omar, Ramzi Mohammed and Hussain Osman were found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court. Their attempt to repeat the carnage of the 7th July 2005 has been proven in court to be no mere hastily arranged ‘copy-cat’ attack, but a long-prepared effort at mass-murder.
The timing of this verdict, just two weeks after the most recent failed attempts to bomb London might well lead to a sense (has already done so, thanks to Matthew Parris at the weekend) that the current bombers are simply dumb, ridiculous or not very good at their task.
We can only hope that the Matthew Parris brigade consider carefully the words of Nigel Sweeney QC, the prosecutor in the 21/7 case:
“The failure of those bombs to explode owed nothing to the intention of these defendants, rather it was simply the good fortune of the travelling public that day that they were spared.”
And one might add that the heroic struggle in almost all camps to find any common factors to link all these people continues to baffle.
Even a Sesame Street kid could work out what all these men had in common (begins with I and ends with M but Mr Brown told me not to say it.)
