Messrs Husain and Butt Blow the Whistle on the Big Lie

So far the country has been most fortunate not to have suffered any fatalities as a result of the latest wave of violent extremism that has descended upon it. We cannot yet know, however, whether all those involved in the violence have yet been rounded up.

By the way, why all the apparent widespread surprise that so many of those who have been detained turn out to be medics? Have those surprised by this fact not heard of the Egyptian physician, Dr Ayman al Zawahiri? Lest anyone reading this not have or needs reminding, then he is, according to the translator of a recently published collection of his writings, ‘widely credited with being the brains behind the terror infrastructure of Al Qaeda, …often labelled the Al Qaeda second in command, [and] in many ways … as critical to the daily functioning of Al Qaeda as Osama bin Laden is, if not more so.’ [Laura Mansfield, His Own Words: A Translation of the Writings of Dr Ayman al Zawahiri (USA: TLG Publications, 2006)]

As usual, it was not long before the usual apologists for Islamist terror, such as Ken Livingstone and Inayat Bungawala, trotted out their usual mantra that it was Britain’s foreign policy, and especially its involvement in the war in Iraq, that was primarily to blame for the attacks, and that if only Britain withdrew its forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, the country would be spared any further attacks.

Blowing the lie on all such lame excuses for the violent attacks the country has undergone is the independent testimony of two former British-born extremists, Ed Husain and Hassan Butt. Both former jihadis have identified as primarily responsible for the violence a particular version of Islam of the validity of which they had previously been convinced that can only ultimately be defeated through counter-argument against it rehearsed again and again by moderate Muslims.

If I were minister in charge of social cohesion, I would make it a top priority to send Messrs Butt and Husain to every school in the country at which there are large numbers of Muslim pupils. I would send them through two-way video link, if not in person, to spread their message throughout the Muslim community. There is an air of authenticity to their testimony, especially that of the considerably much younger and seemingly more chastened figure of Hassan Butt, that cuts through the clouds of rhetoric of those who pretend there to be no connection between Islam and violent extremism. True, it may only be a highly distorted and theologically mistaken variant of that religion that condones or calls for indiscriminate violence of the sort the country faces, but it is yet an interpretation of that religion that does so.

As has been shown by Alcoholics Anonymous, those who have managed to shake free of some former baneful addiction are often best placed and most highly motivated to help others do the same. Likewise, former Muslim extremists like Butt and Husain are powerful and valuable human resources in the fight against violent extremism. The government would do better to draw on the likes of them rather than the false Muslim friends on whom it has relied so heavily in the past.

It is irrelevant that the current perpetrators were not British nationals. They would have little cover were all British Muslims as moderate as our two home-grown former extremists appear to have genuinely become.

Howard Lockett:

I am truly offended by such racist replies. One comment to make a start with is that both Labour and Conservatives have taken us to futile wars to protect very dubious causes. So much is their political might across our borders. In nearly every school classroom, we see pupils shouting disrespect to others seemingly to increase their own status. Not suprisingly they grow up to be adults with their own agendas and narrow-minded attacks on weaker sections of the community, blaming them for all social and political ills. Are these not the very people that are causing the lack of cohesion and purpose? Hidden behind anonymity we hear the comment (anon): "The UK host society - for whatever reason - at present appears bereft of cohesion, purpose, self-belief, the desire to protect what is valuable of its democratic and moral heritage." He then goes on to blame those crossing our borders, instead of looking in a mirror. We destroy ourselves from within and we need to unite with the beauty of our diversity from as much white inheritance as coloured. We can point to those who take advantage of the system but look to both ends of the social spectrum. The Chinese and east European street sellers, cockle pickers, fruit and veg pickers are employed by a rich person getting richer. So much of the social divide, I believe, is because we don't have the moral values ourselves and this moral vacuum exists as much in the higher more powerful sections of society as it does at the bottom. But it it is this power that is so socially destructive for us all. This idea that somehow we had a moral heritage and unity is rubbish, but it may have got worse. This to me has happened under all political leaderships in 50 years. Not so then the noisy politicians but the silent (anon) in the background.

MJW well said;I would just like to add that we have become a weak and feckless society, with no self belief and no direction. The recent capture of navy personnel is a prime example. This lack of belief in our own virtues is a top-down problem: our leaders lack the determination and strength that were prominent in the likes of Churchill, and to some extent Thatcher. Those who have followed are mere superannuated jobsworths.

anon:

I think MJW has touched upon a key issue, that of 'purpose'. It is relatively easy for a minority group to 'punch above its weight' where they are well-organised and ideologically cohesive, particularly where the host society they are 'punching' is divided, weak and given to rejection of its own mores and customs("oikophobic" as it has recently been described). The UK host society - for whatever reason - at present appears bereft of cohesion, purpose, self-belief, the desire to protect what is valuable of its democratic and moral heritage. So, while the UK's spineless and self-promoting politicians continue to fail to protect the UK borders, values, traditions and sovereignty , minority groups with agendas that have no place for the average UK citizen continue to grow in strength and influence. Who speaks for the British now? Nobody - we are betrayed by our politicians, invaded by those who neither understand nor value our heritage - but who are going to vote on issues directly relevant to said values and heritage - and derided by those to whom we have provided citizenship and safe harbour. The UK urgently needs to regain cohesion, purpose and organisation, or its way of life will continue to degenerate.

How can anyone expect social cohesion in a multitribal geographic unit?

The solution is to have seperate tribal homelands with seperate legal systems, parliaments, cultures, etc. The result of trying to mix 'oil' & 'water' in one small island will be tribal war ala Fiji, Rwanda, and most of Africa.

Anonymous:

why is all your work related to muslims? are there no other social cohesion issues in our country? eg refugees.

mike:

Gordon Brown has bannd his ministers from using the word 'Muslim' in connection with terrorism.
Instead the preferred word is 'criminals'.
Interesting concept; since when did your local burglar have a political agenda, or could it be that without the Muslim vote Labour would find it difficult to win an election?
So he and his ilk will continue to tiptoe around the subject of Muslim terrorists to keep themselves in office, so no change then Gordon. We the electorate have become bomb fodder just to keep the multiculturists in office.

MJW:

It is a positive development that some of the apologist myths are being debunked because the apologists may finally understand that the jihadi's only see them as figures to exploit or at best to mock.

British apologists, especially those who've made a professional career (every public funded organisation employs some of them) out of it, are used to dealing with the feckless, indolent and anti-social of Britain all of whom are perfectly happy being patronised, because it’s a state of affairs that suits both parties. To the traditional Lumpenproletariat, the apologist branding them as a victim acts as justification of their negative behaviour and even encourages it, whilst the professional apologists themselves are paid to find “victims” and “oppression” no matter how facile the analysis, and providing long-term justification for negative behaviour perpetuates their careers; they’re not looking for solutions (which would require the abhorrence that is personal responsibility), they’re looking for opportunities to find victims and discuss them in morally relativistic talking shops.

The Islamists by contrast to the Lumpenproletariat have no great desire to be seen as weak, though they’ll happily exploit apologist naivety; they know they’re not victims, in short they have a purpose.
