Euston railway station is set to be the first transport hub in London to utilise facial recognition software through its network of CCTV in an attempt to spot criminals and terror suspects.
Once installed, the technology will monitor petty criminals before moving on to jihadis' once the trial period proves successful later in the year.
However there are doubts over the effectiveness of the three dimensional technology that is being developed by two biometrics experts at the National Policing Improvement Agency.
Earlier this year, German police carried out recognition tests on 200 people but the exercise yielded a lackluster 2 per cent success rate.
The federal police cited “bad lighting” as the reason for the failure and advised against the use of the system and suggests it only be used with biometric technology.
CCTV has played an important role in identifying suicide bombers and convicting bomb plotters by using taped evidence in courts. New technology should be developed to safeguard commuters in the UK.
