Bristol police arrest new suspect in Andrew Ibrahim 'bomb plot'

Police in Bristol investigating the alleged suicide bomb plot by Andrew Ibrahim, a 19-year old convert to Islam, have arrested a second man under the Terrorism Act.

The unidentified man was arrested earlier today. Police are continuing to search two houses related to the man who, like Andrew Ibrahim, is 19-years old. This new arrest may overturn theories that Ibrahim had largely acted alone.

A police spokesman commenting on the arrest said that officers investigating Ibrahim had been "painstakingly scrutinising" thousands of days worth of CCTV footage secured since his arrest, as well as examining more than 2,000 exhibits and more than 2,500 documents.

The arrest of Ibrahim is the latest indication that white converts to Islam may be beginning to play a large role in Islamic militancy in the UK.

I recently wrote an article examining Ibrahim's arrest for the US-based Jamestown Foundation thinktank which concluded that white British converts who adopted extremist beliefs could increasingly pose a danger not only to the UK but also to its allies. The article is available here.
