Press briefing: The Scottish Islamic Foundation

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

Last night, the Centre released its latest briefing. It examines the Scottish Islamic Foundation, a new Muslim group which is going to be launched on Thursday by Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister.

The briefing paper examines the close links between the Scottish Islamic Foundation and the Muslim Brotherhood and concludes that the Scottish government should be cautious about embracing this new group as being representative of Scottish Muslims. The briefing is available online here.

I urge people to take this seriously and not react with typical Scottophobic bigotry, as has been the reaction on some blogs.

This is a British problem and we need some British solidarity here.

Most Scots are like John Smeaton, who tackled the Glasgow airport terrorists - decent citizens who are opposed to people who want to destroy our way of life. Most do not want to leave the Anglo-Scottish union either, though they would like more tax powers for Scotland's parliament. Support for independence stands at only 20%.

However nothing is more calculated to drive Scots to independence than English bigotry. Salmond is calculating on this by picking strategic quarrels with England (this may be one of them) so don't for God's sake play his game and rise to his bait.

There is growing disquiet in Scotland about Salmond's cosying up to Osama Saeed.

But the problem is that most Scots have little contact with Saeed's brand of Islamist inspired sectarian identity politics. Therefore there is complacency. The MSM is dominated, as elsewhere, by politically correct left-liberals unprepared to look critically at Muslim issues, so it is only with difficulty that disquiet is able to articulate itself. However, disquiet IS beginning slowly to articulate itself.

The Muslim community is 0.87% of the population of Scotland but it is disproportionately concentrated in one Glasgow suburb, (not far from where the BBC's Scottish studios are sited), where Saeed is able to gain some traction amongst younger generations. And attention from the Beeb. He stands a good chance of winning Glasgow Central in the 2010 general election.

But his influence in Scotland is disproportionately wide. As a 'Muslim spokesman' his views are heard by the political establishment without much complaint from the rest of Scotland because, frankly, besides this one suburb in Glasgow, inter-community relations are fairly harmonious. Thus Saeed calculates that by a mix of complacency, ignorance and lack of media scrutiny, Scotland is fertile ground for Islamist advance. But mark my words, his sights are not on Scotland but south of the Border. Hence his targetting a Westminster seat.

Like so many 'Pretenders' in our history, Saeed is only using Scotland as a launch pad. As is SIF.

This is a British issue. Please heed it.
