Abu Qatada, a radical preacher described as Osama Bin Laden’s right hand man in Britain, is jailed over fears that he might flee the UK.
Qatada was released from detention on bail after winning a court case against deportation to Jordan in April 2008, on the basis that he would be subjected to torture. On bail, he was under a number of conditions, including wearing an electronic tag, a ban on attending any mosque or leading prayers, and being placed under a 22 hour in-house curfew.
However, judges to his case have recently agreed with ministers that there is a credible risk that Qatada is plotting to abscond, though no plans exist at present. UK ministers want to return him to Jordan.
Furthermore, it is alleged by the Home Office that Qatada had recorded a video sermon at his home, in breach of his bail conditions, though Qatada has denied this allegation saying that the sermon is a pre-recorded home video.
Jacqui Smith, the UK’s Home Secretary stated: "I'm pleased the court has agreed that Qatada should have his bail revoked…He poses a significant threat to our national security and I am pleased that he will be detained pending his deportation, which I'm working hard to secure."
