Any television programme that explores controversial subjects - domestic violence, racism or paedophilia - inevitably attracts attention. In fact, some would say that TV complaints function as a barometer of society's attitudes towards complex issues.

This is a guest post from CSC Research intern Gabrielle Nejad.

What should have been a parade to celebrate the arrival of those soldiers safely returning home from their duties, has instead been held up as an example and reflection of the growing frustrations and divisions deeply embedded within our society. Following the protests in Luton against the British soldiers serving abroad, more violence took place over the weekend via a counter-protest.

Hizb-ut Tahrir (HT) Britain, a global Islamist revolutionary group calling for the establishment of an Islamic state (Khilafah), has recently issued a press statement titled 'Brown welcomes the butcher of Buner to Downing Street' - denouncing Pakistani President  Zardari's visit to the UK. Taji Mustafa HT Britain's media representative said:

What really inspired the 7/7 ringleader?

Well, it certainly was not UK involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.  James Forsyth of The Spectator, with the assistance of Shiraz Maher, has highlighted a crucial segment of the recenly released review of the intelligence.  On page 93 of Could 7/7 Have Been Prevented?, there is a picture of Mohammed Siddique Khan from a surveillance operation in January 2001, this was before the invasion of Afghanistan and long before Iraq.  In fact, it would be difficult even to argue that Khan took his inspiration from the bravery and heroism of the 9/11 murderers.

British Parliamentarians encourage jihad

Reproduced below is my recent blog post on Harry's Place:

I recently wrote an article in Lebanon's Daily Star about Clare Short and Lord Alderdice offering a platform to Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, where I argued that they are serving only to encourage Hamas that they do not need to abandon jihadism.  Recently, the group issued a message which confirms just how helpful members of the UK government have been.

The Muslim Safety Forum (MSF) is one of the groups reported to have influenced the Chief of the Metropolitan Police's decision to scale down police stop and seach powers. This comes two months after revelations that the founding chairman of the MSF and, according to the most recent reports, its current treasurer, Azad Ali, held extremist Islamist views and praised one of the godfathers of modern jihad, Abdullah Azzam.

British Universities: Bought and Paid For

The following was written for the Hudson Institute, a US think tank, by Douglas Murray, Director of the Centre for Social Cohesion, and Robin Simcox, Research Fellow at the CSC and author of 'A Degree of Influence'.

The British government's new counter terrorism strategy, Contest 2, saw the government patting itself on the back for the 'key achievement' of promoting the UK as 'a centre of excellence for Islamic studies outside the Muslim world'. A Degree of Influence, the new Centre for Social Cohesion report, shows that if the British government is relying on Islamic studies to prevent radicalisation of young British Muslims, then we're in trouble.
