Diane Abbott and racism

If you haven't seen it yet, the must-watch meltdown of the week was Diane Abbott's performance on This Week. Gosh I would have loved to have been in the green room afterwards. For years Abbott, Michael Portillo and host Andrew Neil have chummed away together in the studio once a week. Now with Abbott running for Labour leader, Andrew Neil has turned the full, brilliant, glare of his scrutiny on his fellow star.

I've been reading the Rolling Stone magazine piece that brought down General McChrystal and feel very unnerved by it. I know that the consensus dictated that, after remarks made largely by members of McChrystal's team, the General simply had to go. But a number of things occur to me.

This week Theresa May announced that she was keeping extremist cleric Zakir Naik out of Britain. But something interesting has come to my attention. One of the charities which was planning to host Naik at a "peace convention" is Al-Khair. They were hosting it with Peace TV and IQRA TV.

Probably the most distressing of the many distressing sights in the last government was Jacqui Smith going under water on her first day as Home Secretary and never managing to break back above the surface. The flailing moment when we all knew she was dying in the job was of course the moment it became apparent she was making up policy on the hoof, creating weird lists of people who could or could not come into the UK.

The whole controversy and furore surrounding Israel's convoy raid is an utter farce and highlights some disturbing ironies and double standards.
