Email Update
Centre for Social Cohesion
Established by Civitas
77, Great Peter Street
London
SW1P 2EZ
Welcome to the first email update from The Centre for Social Cohesion, established by Civitas. The CSC
is the first think-tank in the UK to focus exclusively on issues of
radicalisation and extremism within Britain.
Publications
The Centre's first published work, the A-Z of Muslim Organisations in Britain is
published on the Centre's website. The work will be added to on a
weekly basis. The first dozen entries already comprise the fullest
analysis yet published of the major Muslim organisations in Britain.
The list ranges across the spectrum from extremist groups like Hizb
ut-Tahrir to moderate organisations like British Muslims for Secular
Democracy. The A-Z is already proving a vital resource for
researchers in this field.
The Centre's first email briefing on wiretap evidence was published and sent to opinion-formers this week.
Website
The Centre's website includes a blog with new entries each day.
In June the Centre played a prominent role in the campaign against the
'Enough' coalition, distributing information on the individuals who
made up the march's organising committee.
Among the material on the website is an important two-part analysis by Professor David Conway, (Senior Researcher at the Centre) of the recent Siddiqui
Report.
The Director's response to the failed London and Glasgow car-bombings, and Senior Researcher
James Brandon's reply to the Muslim Council of Britain's response can be read on the
front-page.
Events
For its first event the Centre hosted the Syrian dissident Wafa
Sultan. Sultan - who shot to worldwide fame after an appearance on Al
Jazeera in 2006 - came to the offices in Westminster to speak to a
range of journalists and opinion-formers. The BBC recorded an
interview with Sultan at the Centre immediately after the event.
Press
Douglas Murray, as the Centre's Director, has appeared across the
media in recent weeks discussing extremism and terrorism issues. He
has appeared twice on the BBC's Question Time, and numerous
times on the BBC including the World Service and as 'Guest of the Day'
on BBC 2's Daily Politics. He has also appeared three times on
National Public Radio in America among many other media outlets.
Senior Research Fellow James Brandon has appeared on Sky News.
Abroad
The Centre's Director has been invited twice in recent weeks to speak
on terrorism issues to the European Ideas Network, and on 25th June he
addressed leaders of the EPP at the European Parliament in Brussels on
the terrorist threat in Europe.
On July 4th he gave a speech to President Aznar's think-tank in
Madrid, FAES, speaking alongside President Aznar and Ambassador John
Bolton on the Spanish and British response to terror. The event was
heavily covered in the Spanish media.
In June the Centre was represented at a conference in California which
brought together many of the world's experts on Islamic extremism,
including Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, Ibn Warraq and Mark Steyn.
Staff
The Centre's full-time staff now include its Director, Douglas Murray,
and its Senior Researchers, Professor David Conway, James Brandon and
Salam Hafez. Other staff are joining the centre in the coming weeks.
Keep Up to Date!
